Terms of Service
The short version: Play fair, don't be a jerk, and we'll give you a great word game. Cancel anytime. If any conflict exists between this document and the plain-English Promise, the interpretation most favorable to you governs.
1. Definitions
"Agreement" means these Terms of Service, the Privacy Policy, and any supplemental terms referenced herein.
"Word Freak," "we," "us," or "our" means Rounds for Squares LLC, a Florida limited liability company.
"User," "you," or "your" means any individual who accesses or uses the Word Freak platform.
"Service" means the Word Freak application, website, API, and all related services and features.
"Game Data" means all data generated through gameplay, including moves, rack contents, timing, scores, board states, and outcomes.
2. Eligibility
You must be at least 13 years old to create an account without parental consent. Users under 13 require verifiable parental consent per COPPA (15 U.S.C. Sections 6501-6506). See our Children's Privacy section for child account protections.
You agree to provide accurate registration information and maintain the security of your login credentials.
3. Your Content and Data Ownership
You retain all ownership rights in your Game Data. We claim no intellectual property rights over the games you play.
By using the Service, you grant us a limited, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to store, process, display, and transmit your Game Data solely as necessary to provide the Service. This license terminates when you delete your account.
You may export your complete Game Data at any time in GCG, JSON, or CSV format. We impose no rate limits or artificial barriers on data export.
4. Our Intellectual Property
The Word Freak software, AI models, user interface, trademarks, and original content are owned by Rounds for Squares LLC or its licensors. Open-source components are governed by their respective licenses.
The Word Freak engine core (Rust GADDAG, move generation, board evaluation) is released under the MIT license at github.com/RoundsForSquares/wordfreak-engine.
5. Fair Play
In rated games, you agree not to:
- Use external word lookup tools, anagram solvers, or reference materials
- Receive real-time assistance from another person or automated system
- Operate multiple accounts for rating manipulation or ban evasion
- Intentionally lose to boost another player's rating
- Use automated play software in human-designated game pools
We detect violations using statistical analysis only (timing patterns, move quality, vocabulary distribution). We do not use screen capture, keystroke logging, process monitoring, or any client-side surveillance.
Enforcement: First offense: warning. Second: 30-day suspension from rated play. Third: permanent ban from rated play (unrated remains). All actions are appealable to a human reviewer within 7 days.
6. Community Standards
The rule: don't be a jerk.
Competitive banter and good-faith challenges are encouraged. Personal attacks, harassment, threats, hate speech, and sustained unwanted contact are prohibited. Block anyone instantly. Reports reviewed within 24-48 hours. Both parties receive a summary of outcomes. Reporter identity is never disclosed.
7. User-Generated Content
Content you submit (puzzle ratings, difficulty votes, free-text comments) is associated with your display name and visible to other users. You retain ownership of your comments. You grant us a license to display them as part of the Service. This license terminates when you delete your account — your comments are removed as part of the deletion process described in our Privacy Policy.
We may remove content that violates community standards. We do not editorially control, pre-screen, or endorse user comments. Per 47 U.S.C. Section 230, we are not liable for third-party content.
8. Payment and Cancellation
Word Freak offers a free tier. Paid tiers provide additional features at prices disclosed before purchase.
Cancellation: One button in Settings. Immediate effect at end of current billing period. No multi-step flows, no retention pitches, no required phone calls. Compliant with FTC click-to-cancel rule (16 C.F.R. Part 425) and California auto-renewal law (Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code Sections 17600-17606).
After cancellation, your account reverts to free tier. Your data is retained unless you separately request deletion.
9. Tournaments
Tournaments award vanity rewards only (badges, titles). No monetary prizes, no gameplay advantages. Entry is free. Bracket capacity is displayed at the entry point. Results are final upon tournament close.
We reserve the right to void results affected by verified fair play violations.
10. Warranty Disclaimer
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.
We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure. We do not warrant that game analysis or coaching suggestions will be accurate or optimal.
11. Account Termination
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your account if you violate these Terms, including the Fair Play and Community Standards sections. Termination follows the enforcement procedure in Section 5 (warnings, then suspension, then ban — with appeal rights at every step).
You may terminate your account at any time by using the account deletion feature or contacting privacy@wordfreak.ai. Upon termination, your data is handled per our Privacy Policy deletion schedule.
12. Limitation of Liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, ROUNDS FOR SQUARES LLC'S TOTAL LIABILITY SHALL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) AMOUNTS PAID BY YOU IN THE 12 MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM, OR (B) $100.
WE SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES.
These limitations do not apply to (a) our gross negligence or willful misconduct, (b) data breaches caused by our breach of the Privacy Policy, or (c) any liability that cannot be excluded by law.
13. Dispute Resolution
Informal first: 30 days of good-faith negotiation via legal@wordfreak.ai.
Arbitration: If informal resolution fails, binding arbitration under AAA Consumer Arbitration Rules. Either party may bring individual claims in small claims court as an alternative.
No class action waiver. If we screw up at scale, we face collective accountability.
Governing law: Florida, except where superseded by federal law or state-specific provisions (CCPA for CA, TDPSA for TX, GDPR for EEA).
14. Changes to These Terms
30 days' advance email notice before material changes. Notice includes a plain-English summary and redlined diff. We never use "by continuing to use the service you agree" as a substitute for actual notice.

15. Open Source Legal Documents
These legal documents (excluding Word Freak trademarks) are released under CC BY 4.0. Fork them for your own project. Aaron Swartz helped build Creative Commons at 15 because he believed legal infrastructure should be accessible to everyone. We agree.
